AURA – Autism-Understanding Real-time Accessibility
PROJECT CODE: KA220-VET - Cooperation partnerships in vocational education and training (KA220-VET)
AURA is a European Erasmus+ project aimed at improving the autonomy and quality of life of people with autism by integrating digital skills and sensory accessibility tools into vocational education and training. The project combines technology, inclusion, and education to create more accessible environments and to support the full participation of autistic people in public spaces.
Over the course of 24 months, partners from Greece, Spain, Italy, and Belgium will work together to develop an innovative training programme that includes three pathways: training for professionals, training for public administrations, and training for people with autism. These programmes will include content on sensory processing, accessibility, and real-time environmental monitoring.
One of the project’s main innovations is the adaptation of the Smart Citizen Kit, an open-source sensor system that collects environmental data (such as noise, light, temperature, or air quality). AURA will create an accessible version of this system, along with an intuitive digital interface for visualising and recording first-person sensory experiences.
The expected results include:
- An inclusive curriculum and adapted training materials.
- A personalised digital system for collecting and analysing environmental data.
- Sensory accessibility recommendations and guidelines for public spaces.
- A collaboration network among professionals, public authorities, and local communities.
With this initiative, AURA aims to promote structural change in the way accessibility is understood, focusing on sensory aspects and giving autistic people a voice in shaping truly inclusive spaces.
